1942 Lincoln Continental poping out of 1st gear

My Dad just bought a 1942 Lincoln Continental Trying to address a few of the problems Any help would greatly be appreciated Popping out of 1st gear while driving If you hold in gear it will stay Pops out if you let go Thanks in advance

Welcome.
When you say 'popping out', are you referring to the transmission it self or just to the shifter? It reads to me that the positioners are worn on the shifter linkage but we cannot say for sure until you get under the dash.
