F1: Formula One To Race In New Jersey In 2013

Formula One officials announced Tuesday afternoon that a Grand Prix will be held in June 2013 along the Hudson River just minutes from New York City.

The event, to be formally named the Grand Prix of America, will be contested on a 3.2-mile street course that runs through West New York, N.J., as well as neighboring Weehawken, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

Among the dignitaries attending Tuesday's announcement at Weehawken's Port Imperial Ferry Terminal were New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and West New York mayor Felix Roque.

"This is another example of what New Jersey can do when we work together," Christie said. "I can assure the people from Formula One this is going to be one of the wisest decisions you've ever made."

Christie added that the economic impact of the event, which is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors, will be "enormous."

The governor's office says no public money will be used to pay for the event.

Roque called the race the "second miracle on the Hudson," referring to the 2009 splash landing of a plane in which all passengers and crew survived.

Race organizers said an admissions ticket encompassing the weekend's three days of on-track activity will cost $360.

The United States last hosted a Formula One race in 2007 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A race is also scheduled for November 2012 at the new Circuit of the Americas course coming to Austin, Texas.

F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone was not in attendance at Tuesday's press conference, as he is headed to India for this weekend's inaugural Grand Prix in the Asian country.

Aw come on ... they're really fast and really shiny!

I've enjoyed F1 racing for years. What I like most is the different track configurations. They're a LOT better then making four or five left hand turns for 500 miles :)
